The Portait of the Protector (ISFJ)

The primary desire of the Protector Guardian is to be of service to others, but here “service” means not so much furnishing others with the necessities of life (the Provider’s concern), as guarding others against life’s pitfalls and perils, that is, seeing to their safety and security. There is a large proportion of Protectors in the population, perhaps as much as ten percent. And a good thing, because they are steadfast in their protecting, and seem fulfilled in the degree they can insure the safekeeping of those in their family, their circle of friends, or their place of business.

Protectors find great satisfaction in assisting the downtrodden and can deal with disability and neediness in others better than any other type. They go about their task of caretaking modestly, unassumingly, and because of this their efforts are not sometimes fully appreciated. They are not as outgoing and talkative as the Providers, except with close friends and relatives. With these they can chat tirelessly about the ups and downs in their lives, moving (like all the Guardians) from topic to topic as they talk over their everyday concerns. However, their shyness with strangers is often misjudged as stiffness, even coldness, when in truth these Protectors are warm-hearted and sympathetic, giving happily of themselves to those in need.

Their quietness ought really to be seen as an expression, not of coldness, but of their sincerity and seriousness of purpose. Like all the Guardians, Protectors have a highly developed puritan work ethic, which tells them that work is good, and that play must be earned-if indulged in at all. The least hedonic of all types, Protectors are willing to work long, long hours doing all the thankless jobs the other types seem content to ignore. Thoroughness and frugality are also virtues for Protectors. When they undertake a task, they will complete it if at all humanly possible; and they know the value of material resources and abhor the squandering or misuse of these resources. Protectors are quite content to work alone; indeed, they may experience some discomfort when placed in positions of authority, and may try to do everything themselves rather than insist that others do their jobs.

With their extraordinary commitment to security, and with their unusual talent for executing routines, Protectors do well in many careers that have to do with conservation: curators, private secretaries, librarians, middle-managers, police officers, and especially general medical practitioners. To be sure, the hospital is a natural haven for them; it is home to the family doctor, preserver of life and limb, and to the registered nurse, or licensed practical nurse, truly the angels of mercy. The insurance industry is also a good fit for Protectors. To save, to put something aside against an unpredictable future, to prepare for emergencies-these are important actions to Protectors, who as insurance agents want to see their clients in good hands, sheltered and protected.

Mother Teresa, George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Steward, and Tsar Nicholas II are examples of Protector Guardian style.

Prove rigging and I will step down, says EC chief

PUTRAJAYA: Show me evidence of election rigging and I will resign, Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman has told his detractors.

He said he was very sad whenever accusations were levelled against the commission, particularly at an illegal rally organised by non-governmental organisation Bersih on Nov 10 calling for fair and just elections.

“If they will show me evidence that the commission has rigged elections, then I will – in fact, all members of the commission – will resign.

“But it must be evidence proven in court and not slogans shouted in the streets,” he told reporters after receiving a report from the election watchdog group Malaysians for Free and Fair Elections (Mafrel) at his office here yesterday.

He also said that some of the suggestions contained in the memorandum, such as asking for the abolition of postal votes, should have been channelled to the right government agency.

“These are structural reforms beyond the commission because postal votes are guaranteed under the Federal Constitution. Nevertheless, starting from this year, the Prime Minister has kindly consented for party agents to be present during postal voting,” he said.

Abdul Rashid said every election organised by the commission had been carried out fairly and freely within the law, which also formed the basis of the report by Mafrel.

“Mafrel has monitored the three by-elections in Ijok, Batu Talam and Machap, as well as the Sarawak state elections. It has concluded that despite some minor mistakes and weaknesses, the commission had done very well.

“As a non-partisan group, this is an acknowledgement for us,” he said, adding that the commission was supportive of efforts by Mafrel to continue monitoring the conduct of the next general election.

On the election date that he purportedly knew of, Abdul Rashid said it was the commission’s duty to fix polling day.

“The ruling party has the right to dissolve Parliament but once this is done, we will have to meet to fix the date for the elections,” he pointed out.

On another matter, Abdul Rashid said he was scheduled to retire from his post by Dec 31 on reaching the mandatory age of 65.

Asked if he had received a notice from the Prime Minister on the possible extension of his tenure, he said:

“I have received no notice and I don’t care. But if I am asked to, I am prepared to lead the commission into another election, even upon retirement.”

Mafrel chairman Abdul Malek Hussin said the watchdog had appointed an eight-member team to monitor the next elections.

Malaysia At 43 Of Corruption Perceptions Index 2007, Up One Rung

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) — Malaysia moved up by one rung in this year’s Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), ending a five year downward trend, Transparency International Malaysia (TI-Malaysia) president, Tan Sri Dr Ramon Navaratnam said today.

Malaysia was ranked 33rd in 2002, 37th in 2003, 39th in 2004, 39th in 2005 and 44th in 2006.

“We are ranked at 43rd spot but with minimal improvement in the score, from 5.0 to 5.1,” he told reporters here.

Although it was a small improvement it must be sustained, he said adding TI-Malaysia urged the government to step up the fight against corruption which was perceived to be a serious concern, especially among the public, officials and politicians.

“Malaysia needs to achieve a much higher level of transparency, integrity and good governance,” he added.

Navaratnam said corruption was a key threat to the rule of law and the long-term sustainability of Malaysia’s economic and social progress, which could undermine income distribution and income equity and also worsen poverty.

He said the perception that corruption was prevalent among the nation’s political and business elite was widespread.

To be on par with the best in the world, he said Malaysia should, among others, pay particular attention to government procurement, especially for large projects, as the perception on integrity of the execution of these projects could impact public perception significantly.

“The awarding of huge infrastructure development to selected business entities without an open and competitive tender and giving special licenses to certain groups does not help to improve the perception of its efforts towards greater transparency.

“Numerous incidents of corruption, malpractices and mismanagement of public funds are also routinely highlighted in the Auditor-General’s yearly reports. Many mega projects are mismanaged and are ultimately bailed out by the government using public funds.

“As part of the process of greater transparency, judicial appoinments should be made by an independent commision. The Anti-Corruption Agency must be established as an independent statutory body to ensure that it will act firmly and fairly without fear or favour.

He said public officials and legislators should also be required to declare their assets publicly, and whistle-blowers should be given appropriate protection.

He said Malaysia should also ratify the United Nations Convention Against Corruption expeditiously and the government should also urgently review the Official Secrets Act and introduce “Freedom of Information” legislation as requisite measures to bring about a more transparent and accountable society.

“As a responsible movement that is affiliated to a reputable international non-government organisation, TI-Malaysia strongly supports the Prime Minister’s stated objective of bringing about higher standards of transparency and accountability in Malaysia,” he added.

CPI 2007 looks at perceptions of public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories. It scores countries on a scale from zero to ten, with zero indicating high levels of perceived corruption and ten indicating low levels of perceived corruption.

last saturday nite while the tragic assault to democracy in malaysia took place in Batu Buruk Kuala Trengganu i was blissfully keeping my spirit up by doing some volunteer work for the Citizen Think Tank talk series at the usual CTT members hang out place – restoran widuri in aman suria. the guest speaker Raja Petra spoke about how the rakyat should not rely on getting a fair play from the current electoral system (according to RPK, the SPR chairman was ‘honest about his dishonesty’ when he admitted the postal votes are the only thing that kept the present umno MPs their place in the parliament) so the rakyat ourselves must push for electoral reform. that’s what BERSIH is doing and look at how the govt/police is treating the rakyat in KT??
